Josh ClaytonFelt, 32, rock singer, composer LOS ANGELES TIMES Los Angeles Josh ClaytonFelt, a co-founder and lead singer for the band School of Fish who went on to become a solo recording artist, is dead of cancer at the age of 32. Mr. Clayton-Felt, who also performed under the name Josh Clayton, died Jan. 19 in Los Angeles, less than a month after his illness was diagnosed, said Robert Weide of Whyaduck Productions. The singer, composer and guitarist released his first solo album, "Inarticulate Nature Boy," in 1996.

It proved somewhat different from his work with the School of Fish from 1989 until it disbanded in 1993. The band, whose work included the albums "School of Fish" featuring the song "Three Strange Days" in 1991 and "Human Cannonball" in 1993, had concentrated on alternative rock, but on his own, Mr. Clayton-Felt incorporated influences from folk music he had learned from his stepfather, as well as a panoply of rock sounds. "This is classic rock in the best sense of the term," noted a Los Angeles Times reviewer. pianist Atlanta's Playboy Club in 1964 and was its house band for three years.

In 1972, Mr. Mitchell was an Atlanta public school music teacher by day and a jazz performer by night when he realized he couldn't continue doing both. He had written the jazz standard "Hard Times" in 1957, and his first record, "Trying to Love Two," went gold in 1977. Since 1979 he had lectured and taught improvisational jazz at Emory University. In collaboration, he wrote, arranged and produced the albums "Coming Back for More" and "It's Time You Took Another Listen." Mr.

Mitchell's best musical moment, he said, was when he performed with, arranged for and conducted the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra for a 1978 summer series concert in Piedmont Park. This work throughout the 1970s brought him awards and accolades, none of which he ever thought he deserved, said his sister. "He's always been so soft. He's always been a humble person," said his sister, Jessie Miles of Atlanta. "He just wanted to go to work and play for the people." And that's why he endured.

"He was very proud of the fact that he could feel out the needs of the room. He knew what the crowd wanted to hear, and he played it for them," said Mr. Har- FAMILY- PLACED DEATH NOTICES ANDERSON Funeral services for Mrs. Emma Louise Anderson, will be held Saturday, January 29, 2000 at 1:00 p.m. from Community Baptist Church, 121 Flat Shoals Ave.

Mr. Mitchell would change drummers and bass players, occasionally feature a vocalist, follow music trends and adapt them to his style, all to offer his audience his best. He also had his piano tuned every 48 hours. "Not only did he play music, it was who he was" said Mr. Mitchell's daughter, Karen Williams of Honolulu.
