Tabler will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his left knee this morning at Lutheran Medical Center. Dr. Mark Berkowitz will perform the operation. The Indians' first baseman returned Tuesday to Cleveland from Toronto, and the knee was examined yesterday. Loose cartilage, dating.to an old injury four or five years ago, was lodged in the knee joint and was preventing Tabler from straightening his leg.

1 "We're definitely going to miss him," manager Pat Corrales said. Tabler leaves The Season That Shame Forgot hitting .275 with five home runs and 59 runs batted in. Tabler's RBI total is third highest on the Indians. A Joe Carter played first base for the first time last night against Toronto, but Mike Hargrove is expected to get most of the playing time until Jim Wilson is called up from Maine. The Tribe's Class AAA club opened the International League playoffs last night against Tidewater.

Tabler's fondest wish was to make up for hitting into a game ending double play last Saturday in a 10-8 loss to Milwaukee. The double play came with the bases loaded in the ninth inning and ruined Tabler's 6-for-6 hitting streak with the bases full this season. "I just hope that wasn't my last at bat," Tabler said the next day. "I don't want it to end that way. Not so much because of the streak, but because we had a chance to win the game." In his first two seasons, Tabler hit .291 (65 RBI) and .290 (68 RBI) for the Indians.

Since August, he had been splitting more and more time with Mike Hargrove as the knee grew worse. "Pat, (Brett) Butler and I went to the movies the other day." Hargrove said. "When we were walking over there, he felt something pop and said the knee felt 100 percent better. Then after the movie, he could hardly walk. I told him, 'If we were in a race, it be worth it to take a But we aren't, so he might as well get it done now and be completely healthy for next season." The knee injury also led to hamstring and lower back problems for Tabler, 27.

The Indians are going to take a long look at Wilson. Wilson hit .287 for the Guides and led the IL in home runs (26) and RBI It was the second year in a row Wilson has led the league in RBI. "If we call him up," Corrales said, "we're going to look at him at first base. We've already go a DH." The rap on Wilson is defense. At 6-3 and 225 pounds, he is not exactly a gazelle at first base.

"We know his range is limited," Corrales said, "but he's got soft hands. He's an adequate first baseman with the range of Steve Balboni (Kansas City's large first baseman) and people like that." Corrales is not entertaining serious thoughts of playing Carter at first base. Carter played seven games at first base in 1984, but his future is in the outfield. "I see Carter as an outfielder, who could fill in at first base it there was a need for it," Corrales said. "But we need some more power in the outfield for next season.

I think he can eventually find the stroke he had last year. He just had a miserable first half of the season and has been struggling to catch up ever since." A Carter hit 13 home runs and drove in 41 runs in half a season for the Indians last year. This year, he's hitting .238 with nine homers and 36 RBI.
