UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (UPI) Thousands of people were glad to see Penn State tailback John Cappelletti leave the West Virginia game way through the third period. Cappelletti was one of them. So were West Virginia's explosive football team and the thocsands of Mountaineer fans who were anticipating an upset after 17 consecutive years of frustration. But when he left the game, Cappelletti his badly bruised right shoulder heavily taped and protected by a special plastic cup, already had four touchdowns and 130 yards rushing as unbeaten and nationally sixth- Four.
Touchdowns Penn State's Cappelletti Played At 75 Per Cent State, meanwhile, was scoring more points against West Virginia than any team since 1904. The Penn State defense, best in the nation against the rush, held West Virginia to zero yards rushing and 166 yards passing that included. that long touchdown bomb. Other Penn State scoring came on a 76 yard touchdown pass from Tom Shuman to flanker Chuck Herd; a 53 yard run by fullback Bob Nagle four yard dive by backup tailback Rusty Boyle; a yard run by freshman Mike Pirogowicz, who was not even listed in the program, and (25 yard pass interception by linebacker Greg Buttle. Buttle's interception was the fourth of the game off Williams and pushed the number of West Virginia passing turnovers for the season to 21, a school' record.
It was the Mountaineers' fourth consecutive loss after victories in their first three games. Aside from the two long touchdowns, West Virginia otherwise penetrated Penn State territory just once during the game on a short lived 5-drive to the Nittany 36 in the first period. A 15 yard loss on the next play moved West Viralginia back to its own 49. Thundering Herd Visits Golden Flashes Saturday HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (UPI) Losing its second straight heartbreaker before the home folks, Marshall's Thundering Herd must get cranked up again this week to play another top-rated football team.
Marshall, 2-5 following the 24- 21 loss to Bowling Green, visits Kent State, 6-1, Saturday. The Golden Flashes whipped Utah 27-16 in a weekend road game. A Homecoming crowd of 14,900 watched the Herd jump ahead of the Falcons, now 5-2, twice before rallying to tie at in the third period. Then, with 11:19 left Don Taylor toed a 21-yard field goal that decided the outcome. Marshall was within easy field goal range with three minutes remaining but Coach Jack Lengyel unhesitatingly ordered the Herd to go for the touchdown on fourth down at the Bowling Green 12-yard line.
Quarterback Reggie Oliver whipped a pass to freshman Bob Burgoon but the ball sailed untouched through the end zone. "We didn't come home for Homecoming to play for a tie," Lengyel said. "It wasn't that big a decision." Lengyel figured it was the Herd's own mistakes that spellled defeat, much like the 30-28 John Mahaffey Makes Sahara First Pro Win By JOE ST. AMANT LAS VEGAS, Nev. (UPI) John Mahaffey, a devotee of physical conditioning, gives a vote of thanks to a pair of older pros, Ben Hogan and Gary Player, for his first PGA tournament win.
Mahaffey, 25, the 1970 NCAA golf titlist when he, played for the University Houston, turned pro in 1971 and everyone predicted a great future. It wasn't until Sunday, however, that he got his first victory and won $27,000 in the $125,000 Sahara Invitational. He shot 68-66-69-58--271, 13 under par for the Sahara Country Club course. His margin of victory was three strokes. Hogan has helped him with his game and Player has advised him on exercise.
The pros enjoyed golfing weather with the temperature in the mid-70s and hardly a breath of wind for four days. Eichelberger second of Waco, of took money $15,390 with 64-274. His 64 tied A course record set Friday by Australia's David Graham. Mike Hill, Jackson, also Secretariat Ends Career With Win By DAVID COHEN ranked Penn State crushed West Virginia 62-14 for its seventh victory of the season. "Cappelletti played at '75 per cent today and showed he's a super back," said a jcbilant coach Joe Paterno.
"He showed people he has speed and what a great player he is." With Orange Bowl scouts looking on for the second time this season, Cappelletti, injured two weeks ago against Army, scored on runs of 10, two, four and two yards in surpassing the 190 yard mark for the ninth time in 18 career games at running back. Five others also scored touchdowns in pushing Penn State to within four games of its third unbeaten season in. the past six years and a seventh consecutive bowl bid. "When the trainer and es said they wanted me out, I wasn't going to argue," said Cappelletti. "My shoulder was 2 little weak, a little sore at that point.
It was starting to get a little stiff, but I think it's going to be all right." Penn State's defense was as devastating as Cappelletti was sensational. Only a 96 yard touchdown pass from sophom*ore Ben Williams to flanker Danny Buggs and a 95 yard kickoff return by Artie Owens, both in the second period, averted. a shutout. They were the first touchdowns allowed by Penn State in the first half this year and the most points scored against the Nittany Lions this season. TORONTO U(PI) adow Stable's Secretariat, in a valedictory worthy of an illustrious career, galloped to victory Sunday in the $142,700 Canadian International pionship stakes at race track.

Minnesota Edges Rams In Battle Of Unbeatens BY JOE CARNICELLI UPI Sports Writer I Fran Tarkenton finally put to' rest the claim that he can't the big ones. Tarkenton, the veteran quar-1 terback who was traded from Minnesota a few years back by Norm Van Brocklin because he couldn't win the important games, managed to win the glamor game of the year Sunday. The veteran from Georgia passed for the game's only touchdown as the Vikings edged the Los Angeles Rams 10-9 in a matchup of the National Football League's only unbeaten clubs. The 33-year-old Tarkenton, dealt back to Minnesota a by the New York Giants last season, threw a nine-yard TD pass to rookie Chuck Foreman in the second period for a 10-0 lead and then let the Vikings' rugged defense do the rest. The "Purple Gang" held the Rams without a TD, limiting them to three David Ray field goals, as the Vikings lifted their record to 7-0 and took a four-game lead in the National Conference Central Division.
Fred Cox kickel a 15-yard field goal in the first period and Tarkenton capped an 80-yard drive with his. TD pass to Foreman. Ray connected on field goals of 30, 35 and 47 yards but John Hadl could not push the Rams across the goalline. While Tarkenton was winning a big one, Dallas and Washington were losing small ones. Philadelphia, with Gabriel throwing two TD passes to Haroll Carmichael, stunned the Cowboys 30-16 while even more surprising was New Orleans, which got four field goals from Bill McClard in his first appearance in a Saints, uniform and hung on for a 19-3, victory over the Redskins.
In other NFL games Sunday, Pittsburgh downed Cincinnati 20- 13 but lost quarterback Terry Bradshaw and running back Frenchy Fuqua in the process, Detroit crushed Green Bay 34- 0, Oakland beat 1 Baltimore 34-21, Denver whipped the New York Jets 40-28, Atlanta stopped San Francisco 17 3, Chicago trounced Houston 35-14, St. Louis ripped the New York Giants 35-27, Miami defeated New England 30-14 and San Diego tied Cleveland 16-16. Roger Staubach threw TD passes eight and 14 yards to Otto Stowe for Dallas.
McClard, signed this week to replace Happy Feller, kicked field goals of 45, 43, 30 and yards and Archie Manning threw a nine-yard touchdown pass to Bill Butler. The young Saints' defense dropped Washington quarterbacks four times made two interceptions and closed off the Redskins' running attack.
