So, what is Twerk Music?

No one disputes that the “Bounce” scene most likely got started in New Orleans during the 80s. Various dance moves like “bend over,” “shoulder hustle,” “clapping,” “booty clapping,” “booty popping,” and the ever elusive and ambiguous “wild wood” were dance moves born in the bounce scene. Twerking seems to have had its origins here as well.

All we know is that afterMiley Cyrustwerked on stage at the MTV Awards in 2013, people everywhere started doing it and singing about it. Twerking became the most googled “What is” term of the year.

So, I decided to take a look at some of thebest songs to twerk to. Whether they qualify as “Bounce” or “Twerk” music is irrelevant. These songs will cover a range of artists and genres and are in no particular order or ranking.

Top 44 Best Twerk Songs of All Time (1)

Top 44 Best Twerk Songs of All Time

1 WAP by Cardi B (feat. Megan Thee Stallion)

Album:WAP (Single)

No doubt this song had a lot of shock value when it first came out. But, it would not have stood the test of time as long as it did if there weren’t more to the mix.

The world is changing at a faster rate than ever before in its history. And this is forcing us to deal with profound changes to many doctrines, beliefs, and long-standing stereotypes.

Gender, sexuality, and sex are becoming fair-game topics across the board. So, artists like Cardi and Megan decided to deliver their two cents on the matter with quite a bit of punch. Being explicit may be the only way to get people to focus on the issue of sexuality and living in a sex-positive society.

All that being said…

There’s also a nice, good old-fashioned dose of fun and humor thrown into the mix as well. The track was the first female rap collaboration in history to debut at the top of the Billboard Hot 100. It also broke streaming records within its first week of release. “WAP” has been certified seven times platinum in the US. As a result, it’s likely themost popular twerking songever.

2 Anaconda by Nicki Minaj

Album:The Pinkprint

Samples:Baby Got Back By Sir Mix A Lot

Nicki is known for dropping big tracks at the right time. And “Anaconda” couldn’t have been timed better. She needed to affirm her hardcore rap influence after the success of “Starships.” What better way to do that than with a track like this?

The message might seem a bit menacing. Many consider it to be a ‘dis track’ directed at Sir Mix A Lot and male chauvinism in general. Nicki has proven herself capable of serious commentary on society in the past, and no doubt, there is some to be found here.

But her agenda isn’t to topple the male gender and replace it with women…

“Anaconda” is a bit of healthy social jabbing by a girl with a good attitude and a creative mind. It also happens to be one phat track and, for sure, one of thebest to get down to if you’re a twerker.

Furthermore, the music video for “Anaconda” broke streaming records. It accumulated almost twenty million views within the first twenty-four hours of release. It’s the first music video by a female solo act to make it to one billion views on YouTube. The track has been certified double-platinum in the US.

3 Dance A$$ Remix by Big Sean (feat. Nicki Minaj)

Album:Finally Famous

Samples:“U Can’t Touch This” By M.C, Hammerand“Super Freak” By Rick James

Big Sean is usually more lyrical and story-driven in his approach. However, decided to get right to the point with this saucy number from his debut album. The original had enough spunk to make people take notice. But the remix version made them put their drinks down and start moving.

From the masterful use of the M.C. Hammer sample to the crisp and thumping production on the low end, “Dance A$$” bombards you with sound. The addition of Minaj makes for a more unpredictable track than the original. Her seemingly endless supply of sex appeal and intimidating confidence leaves this track just dripping in secret sauce.

4 Bussin by Nicki Minaj (feat. Lil Baby)

Album:Queen Radio: Volume 1

Minaj’s appearance on several songs in my list of the best twerk songs of all time should come as no surprise. She could be considered one of the biggest flag flyers for the female Hip-Hop movement of the 21st century.

The track serves as a follow-up to the duo’s previous collaboration, “Do We Have A Problem?” Interestingly, the music video features a small teaser for “Bussin.” Needless to say, the anticipation this created for the track helped it become a massive success once it dropped.

Minaj is known for having a very aggressive approach when she wants. “Bussin” can be seen as one of her more voracious performances. Likewise, the gritty and sleek style of Lil Baby adds to the darkness of this foreboding song.

5 Shake That Monkey by Too Short (feat. Lil Jon)

Album:Married To The Game

A lesser-known twerking song that has managed to become an underground hit since its release. This one, like many of thegreatest Hip-Hop twerk songs, has some very simple instructions. So, don’t worry too much about what to do.“Put a hump in ya back and shake ya rump.”

The simple backbeat and synths stabs add a nice color to the production. At the same time, the aggressive rap verses enforce the beat to create that infectious swing that will make your lower half move of its own accord.

6 How Low By Ludacris

Album:Battle Of The Sexes

The importance of “How Low” to the shaking of booties across the world cannot be overstated. It’s one of the original anthems for getting down and using what your Mamma gave you. The track comes from Ludacris’ seventh studio album and remains one of his biggest hits ever.

When the track first appeared, it was almost as if a craze for doing the Matrix bullet-dodging pose had gripped the globe. Social media was riddled with short videos of folks showing off how low they can go to this seminal tune.

“How Low” is probably themost successful twerking song. It has been certified triple-platinum in the US. Likewise, it has been sampled in numerous Trap and EDM songs.

7 Bandz A Make Her Dance by Juicy J (feat. Lil Wayne and 2 Chainz)

Album:Star Trippy

One of the best things about this song is that it transcends the gender border like few other tracks in the same vein have managed to. When the first few bars of this song begin to bellow from the club’s speakers, you’ll notice men and women alike begin to grab the closest pole (or partner) and start showing their sleazy side.

The music video’s excess, vulgarity, strippers, p*rn actresses, and even a drummer from a high school band (no joke) fit perfectly with this track.

Mike WiLL Made-It did a stellar job producing this almost ominous-sounding background. If you listen to it without the vocals, it would almost be suited to an anthemic and brooding background. But, when the thumping drum samples and Sci-Fi-sounding synths are mixed with the performances of these three rappers, it immediately puts you in the dark corridor of a private room in an after-hours club.

8 Get Low by Lil Jon and the East Side Boyz (feat. Yin Yang Twins)

Album:Kings of Crunk

This is a great song to swing your behind to. Also, it’s considered by many to be the breakthrough song for the Crunk genre. When it first dropped in 2003, the world was introduced to a new genre of Hip-Hop that would soon come to dominate the charts.

Despite this track not attaining gold certification, it has become a titanic hit in the Hip-Hop and Dance world. So massive that a playlist of the best twerk songs of all time would be incomplete without it. The thumpy bass beat with an offset “swing feel” is perfect for those low dips on the dancefloor.

This track helped solidify Lil Jon’s reputation as one of the seminal Crunk godfathers. It also jump-started his road to international fame. Whether you even like Hip-Hop or not, chances are you’ve nearly fallen on your ass dancing to it in a club a bunch of times. That how powerful it is.

9 Thot sh*t by Megan Three Stallion

Album:Something For Three Hotties

Megan has proven to be very outspoken and unapologetic from the get-go. Most of her reactions towards criticism are in the vein of “I was expecting this; it’s nothing new.” “Thot sh*t” is a wonderful example of how she fights her battles using her craft.

The track and its very controversial video were created in reaction to social media backlash on her previous creations like “Body” and “WAP.” Without any mercy, Megan fires off one machine gun verse after another, breaking down stereotypes and conservatism. All while proudly flexing the well-defined muscles of her sexuality.

This happens to the backdrop of killer beats and baselines laid down by production wizards LilJuMadeDaBeat and OG Parker. It doesn’t matter what your opinions on gender roles and sexuality are. The intoxicating thump of this platinum-certified, Grammy-nominated single is sure to make you want to twerk till the last bars fade out.

10 Giné by 6ix9ine

Album:Giné (Single)

Here’s one of the most controversial rappers in the game at the moment. This track beats you from the first bar and doesn’t stop till the last beat pops.

With a super-dense Trap-influenced backtrack, 6ix9ine boasts as loudly as he can about getting one up on haters. And making it through his last federal court case.“I shot at all y’all rappers – Real life, no cap – The feds charged me for that.”

He even brings up a fellow rapper who got shot. Then, disses the deceased’s friends for not retaliating properly.“Your man got shot, he not coming back – Go get a gun and get some get back.”All controversy aside, if you likeHardcoreTrapsongs that have a twerkable beat, this one is sure to cross over your radar soon enough.

11 Ride Or Die by Megan Thee Stallion and VickeeLo

Album:Queen and Slim: The Soundtrack

No doubt this track’s appearance in the 2019 romantic crime dramaQueen and Slimhelped its popularity. This early track shows the relentless and aggressive rapping style that would later come to characterize Megan as an artist who was there from the very start.

This is ahardcore song for twerking. It also holds a strong female empowerment theme, like many of Megan’s other songs. No one can tell you that they’ll kick your ass while looking super damn sassy, like Three Stallion.

12 Blick Blick by Coi Leray (feat. Nicki Minaj)

Album:Trendsetter

Nothing reflects how things have changed in the last two decades more than two hardcore female rappers blowing off steam in an over-the-top ego-drive boasting track like this. Both Leray and Minaj are forced to be reckoned with on their own. So, a team-up effort on a ball-breaker track like this makes perfect sense. Gone are the days when females boasting about sex were considered sleazy and cheap.

These two honeys are brimming with self-assuredness and won’t shy away from flaunting their success and affluence. Haters can hate if they want. It’s not going cool the heat from the fire that burns in them.

Tracks like this should allow more women in music and media to have a bit of fun without fear of judgment. Conservatism has had its day. And, if you don’t believe it, I’m sure someone will twerk in your face while this song plays to prove you wrong.
